Zlatan Ibrahimovic announced his immediate retirement from football when his contract with AC Milan expired.
Prior to his final match for the club, fans at the San Siro bid the Swedish striker farewell.
Although he previously claimed he would not retire, it now appears that the 41-year-old has changed his mind and decided to give up the beautiful game.
The legendary football player had been linked with a move to fellow Serie A team Monza in earlier rumors, but after leaving AC Milan, Ibrahimovic has decided to give up playing altogether.
When he scored against Udinese in March, the Sweden international set a record for the oldest goal scorer in Serie A.
Following the announcement of the end, video posted to Twitter showed a man who appeared to be very upset as he took it all in.
On Sunday, flags in Milan’s stands with his image joined the ‘Godbye’ gesture to offer him a dignified send-off.
The club tweeted, “I’m not crying, you’re crying,” in response to the emotional scene, as the striker appeared moved as he made a heart sign to fans before the game.
Zlatan is not yet preparing to retire despite the small part he has played this year.
I’m not one to give up,’ he admitted to La Gazetta dello Sport, ‘but there must also be joy in what you do, and I can’t help but feel at ease with what I can achieve as the best player in the world.
But we haven’t arrived yet. I still believe I have something to offer.
