Solar energy is becoming increasingly popular in countries around the world as an affordable, renewable source of electricity.
Nigeria is the fifth largest producer of oil in the world and has vast areas of land and sunshine that are suitable for using solar energy to produce power.
General Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria commissioned the project on 30th January 2023. It is predicted that the solar plant will save the country $5m a year in energy costs and will produce enough electricity to power around 3,000 homes.
The project is funded by Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) with an amount of $16m.
NSIA is an investment company set up by the Nigerian government to manage its foreign currency reserves and use them to finance public projects that will help to improve the economy of the country.
The Kano solar power plant according to local reports is currently the largest grid-connected solar PV plant in Nigeria. The plant comprises over 8,500 photovoltaic panels and is expected to produce 10 megawatts of electricity, which is equivalent to the power produced by a medium-sized power plant.
This facility will significantly increase the amount of solar power produced in the country and help to meet an increasing demand for electricity as more homes and businesses switch to renewable energy sources.
It is hoped that the plant will be the first of many similar facilities to be built across the country.
